Waste

Responsible Waste Disposal

Responsible waste disposal requires much more than simply throwing things you do not need or do not want any more in a trash bin. Many types of waste pose a serious threat to the environment if not disposed properly. For instance, batteries and refrigerators can leak dangerous chemicals which can seriously contaminate soil and even groundwater if ending up in a landfill with ordinary waste. In addition to hazardous materials, there are also waste materials which can be recycled and reused such as plastic, metal and paper. Responsible waste disposal therefore plays an important role in nature preservation.

In order to reduce the harmful impact of waste you create on the environment, you should sort your waste as instructed by your local authorities and dispose it sorted into proper waste bins. That way you will help prevent contamination of the environment with hazardous chemicals as well as a number of other environmental challenges related to the waste pollution problem. Plastic for instance takes hundreds of years to decompose, while 17 trees are cut down to produce 1 tonne of paper. Improper disposal of metals does not have such a direct effect on the environment as metal is a natural element, however, virgin metal production severely affects the nature because metal collection involves mining, while the production processes use enormous amounts of energy. As you can see, waste sorting does not only help reduce waste pollution but it helps preserve nature in a number of ways. So if you are not sorting your waste yet, take it on and make a difference.

Waste

Have you ever heard of the proverb “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure”? Well, it is true because many things that end up in trash are not as useless as you may think. So when you are having spring cleaning, consider a garage sale or offer the things you do not want any longer at one of many online auctions. Also, keep in mind that there are many people out there who are in need of help. So instead of throwing old but still useful clothes, shoes, furniture, toys and similar things in a thrash bin, donate them to a charity.

In addition to properly disposing your waste, you should also keep in mind that many things you throw away on a daily basis can be reused such as plastic shopping bags for instance. Rather than buying garbage bags, you can use the ordinary ones. Another great example are liquid laundry detergent bottles which can be used as watering cans. Egg cartons are great as seed starters, envelopes can be used as scratch paper, cardboard boxes can be used as storage boxes, etc.

In the end, try to reduce the amount of waste you create as much as possible. Remember the plastic shopping bags? Instead of taking new each time you leave the grocery, carry one along. Also, choose products with minimal packaging, products which are made from recycled materials and consider repairing things rather than immediately discarding them.
